VicRoads Driving Test Day Checklist – What to Bring & What to Expect (2026 Guide)

vicroads driving test day checklist – what to bring and what to expect on test day

The day of your VicRoads driving test can be nerve-wracking. Knowing exactly what to bring and what to expect can make a huge difference in your confidence and performance. In this complete 2026 checklist, we cover everything you need for test day success — whether your test is at Pakenham East or another centre in Melbourne.

What to Bring on Your VicRoads Driving Test Day

Make sure you have everything ready the night before to avoid last-minute stress.

  • Your Learner Permit – Original document (not a photocopy)
  • Proof of Identity – Passport, Australian driver licence, or other accepted ID
  • Logbook – Completed and signed (120 hours for under-21s)
  • Vehicle for the Test – Roadworthy car with current registration (or use our test package car for $170)
  • Payment – Test fee (cash or card depending on the centre)
  • Comfortable Clothing & Shoes – Flat shoes with good grip (no thongs or heels)
  • Water and Light Snack – In case you have to wait

What to Expect on Test Day – Step by Step

  1. Arrival at the Test Centre – Arrive at least 15–20 minutes early. Pakenham East is the most common centre for south-east Melbourne learners.
  2. Vehicle Inspection – The examiner will check lights, indicators, tyres, wipers, horn, and seatbelts.
  3. Pre-Drive Questions – You may be asked to identify controls (indicators, hazard lights, demister, etc.).
  4. The Actual Test – Usually 30–45 minutes. It includes Stage 1 (low-speed manoeuvres) and Stage 2 (on-road driving).
  5. Immediate Feedback – The examiner will tell you the result right after the test.

Our Top Test Day Tips for Success

  • Have a good night’s sleep and eat a light breakfast.
  • Arrive early but not too early (avoid sitting and getting nervous).
  • Do a short warm-up lesson with your instructor before the test if possible.
  • Stay calm – examiners expect some nerves. Focus on safe driving, not perfection.
  • Use your mirrors and do clear head checks – this is one of the most common fail points.
  • If you make a small mistake, don’t panic. Keep going safely.

Should You Use Your Own Car or the Driving School’s Car?

Using our car + instructor for the test ($170 package) is highly recommended because:

  • The car is dual-control and fully roadworthy
  • Your instructor can give you a warm-up and last-minute tips
  • You don’t have to worry about vehicle inspection failing
